autograph authentication signed memorabilia signature analysis

JSA (James Spence Authentication) is a Premium-tier third-party authentication bureau for autographs, founded in 2005 by James Spence Jr. and now operating as CGCxJSA following its acquisition by Certified Collectibles Group. It authenticates signatures forensically, comparing each against a reference library of several hundred thousand exemplars built over decades, and issues a numbered Letter of Authenticity that a collector can verify independently. JSA is widely accepted by major auction houses and dealers, which makes its opinion one of the most portable in the autograph market.

How JSA authenticates

JSA authenticates by forensic comparison rather than by witnessing the signing. Each submitted autograph is examined by its authenticators against an exemplar database numbering in the hundreds of thousands of files, assessing the signature against known genuine examples and the characteristics of the ink and medium. Founder James Spence Jr. built his reputation over more than three decades in the autograph industry before establishing the company in 2005, and JSA operates from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Parsippany, New Jersey. Its opinions are used by major auction houses, which is the practical measure of a third-party authenticator's standing.

What you receive and how to verify it

A JSA-authenticated item carries a numbered Letter of Authenticity. The serial number on that letter can be checked at JSA's own verification page, where entering the number confirms the record JSA holds for that item. This is independent verification: the assurance does not rest on the seller's word but on JSA's database, which a buyer can query directly before or after purchase. Where an item carries the combined CGCxJSA service, the authentication record sits within the wider Certified Collectibles Group system.

Why this matters for collectors

For a collector, JSA's value is a portable, independently checkable opinion on the signature itself. It is the right assurance when an autograph's worth depends on expert forensic judgement rather than on a documented signing event, and because auction houses and dealers recognise JSA, an item carrying its letter travels well in the secondary market. Walkouts uses JSA as a premium third-party route where a signature benefits from independent forensic authentication.
