About
Shimizu S-Pulse is a Japanese professional football club from Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka, in Shizuoka Prefecture. It was formed in 1991 as one of the ten founding members of the J.League, the 'Original Ten', and at first drew its players only from Shizuoka Prefecture. The name combines S, for Shizuoka, Shimizu and soccer, with Pulse, for the spirit of the team and its supporters.
The club has won one Emperor's Cup, one J.League Cup, two Japanese Super Cups and one J2 League title, and on the continent the Asian Cup Winners' Cup in 1999-00. The J1 title has eluded it: the closest it came was 1999, when it won the second stage and then lost the championship to local rivals Júbilo Iwata on penalties.
Home matches are played at the Nihondaira Sports Stadium, known under a naming-rights deal as IAI Stadium Nihondaira, which holds 19,594. Shimizu play in orange, and Puma has made the kit exclusively since 1997.
In 2011 Shimizu signed Freddie Ljungberg, a move billed as the 'Signing of the Century' and considered by many in Japan one of the greatest signings in league history. His player record on Walkouts lists the club. This page is a club profile.
