Graded Signatures on Football Shirts: The 1 to 10 Scale
As well as authenticating a signature, an authenticator can grade it. The expert assesses the placement, the marker, the signature and its overall look, and gives a grade from 1 to 10.
What is a graded signature?
A grade is an expert's assessment of how a signature looks, given on a scale from 1 to 10 alongside the authentication. It considers where the signature sits, the marker used, how clearly it is written and how it looks overall.
The grading scale
10: a flawless signature, cleanly placed.
9: near perfect, with barely visible imperfections.
8: excellent, with minor flaws that do not spoil it.
7: light imperfections such as a thin or broken stroke.
6 and below: visible flaws such as smudging, skipping or poor placement.
What a grade does and does not tell you
A grade describes the look of the signature. It does not change whether the signature is genuine; that is the authentication. A lower grade on a genuine signature is still a genuine signature.
What to check
The grader: which authenticator gave the grade, for example Beckett, PSA or JSA.
The reference: a certificate number that shows the grade in the grader's database.
Keeping it with the shirt
Keep the grading certificate with the shirt, and display it away from direct sunlight so the signature keeps the look it was graded for.
