The 1990-91 season was one of contrasts for AC Milan. The club won the UEFA Super Cup, defeating Sampdoria, and the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Olimpia Asuncion. In the European Cup, Milan's pursuit of a third consecutive title ended in controversy: during the quarter-final against Marseille, the stadium floodlights failed, Milan refused to continue once the lights were restored, and the club was subsequently banned from European competition for the following season. Despite this, Milan won the European Cup that season, defeating Benfica 1-0 in the final. In Serie A, the club finished second, five points behind champions Sampdoria.
